Have you had your exhaust / diesel particulate filter / catalytic convertor stolen?? Well I’m afraid you’re not alone, were experiencing a lot of calls where people have had 
parts of their exhaust stolen for scrap value. We’ve had one instance where one customer has had 4 systems stolen in one theft from 4 2011 Fiat motorhomes.
Drivers are being urged to beware of having their catalytic converters stolen due to the rising price of metal. Police believe metal thieves have been targeting commercial vehicles around industrial sites.
The mechanical components attached to a vehicle’s exhaust system can fetch up to £150 on the black market and it is thought they are being stripped for the precious platinum inside. There was no other damage to the vehicles so it looks like they were just targeting the metals in the converters for financial gain.
Catalytic converters, fitted on all vehicles made after 1992, are loaded with small amounts of precious metals including platinum, palladium and rhodium. The increase in such incidents is thought to be linked to the increasing price of scrap metal; ferrous metals such as iron and steel are being shipped to India and China to support their huge building projects.
One of the main problems at the moment is that systems are being stolen containing diesel particulate filters being mistaken for catalysts but thieves seem to be unaware there is no precious metal content in these parts.
