Exhaust Systems
What does an exhaust system do?
The functionality of an exhaust system is to guide the reaction of exhaust gases away from the controlled combustion inside an engine. A catalytic converter is used in the exhaust system to reduce the toxicity of emissions from the engine.
Car Exhaust Systems have four main functions: to control noise to direct exhaust fumes away from passengers, to improve the performance of the engine and to improve fuel consumption.
Exhaust systems consist of an assembly of rear silencer, exhaust front pipes, back boxes and catalytic converters.
Common Failures
Exhausts can corrode from inside and out, the longevity of the exhaust system depends on how frequently the car is run and if it used on long or short trips.
A Blowing Exhaust, this is easily diagnosed as the car will sound much like a tractor with the noise coming from around the exhaust manifold. The problem could be a blowing gasket or a cracked manifold, if it is the latter then the manifold may need replacing.
We have a full range of Bosal exhausts, exhausts systems, front pipes and catalytic converters.
.
Due to government legislation it is now a legal requirement on vehicles registered after March 2001 (anything with a Y registration or later) to be fitted with a type approved catalytic converter.
The difference between a non approved and a type approved catalytic converter is the amount of precious metal contained in the brick and its overall volume, the parts will look exactly the same.
The price difference in the type approved catalytic converter is due to the increase in precious metal content.
It is a legal requirement to fit the correct catalytic convertor to your car.
