London Emissions Zone or the LEZ comes into legislation on the 3rd of January 2012, it aims in reducing the amount of particulate matter (carbon) that is emitted through exhaust systems.
Vehicles manufactured before 2002 generally won't be fitted with a diesel particulate filter which helps reduce the amount of particulate matter deposited in the atmosphere, therefore these vehicles will have to have a particulate filter retro fitted as an aftermarket add on. In retro fitting a diesel particulate filter and having it accredited by VOSA approved installer you will comply with the LEZ and not have to pay a daily charge. Payback times on a retro fitted diesel particulate filter in comparison to the daily charges of the LEZ is around 20-22 working days depending on your size of vehicle.
