Coil Springs

What is a Coil Spring?

Your cars suspension is supported on normally 4 coil springs some vehicle run coil springs at the front and another system at the rear but the majority of passenger vehicles have a coil spring at each corner.

Coil springs are unfortunately one of the most frequently damaged parts of a vehicle - due to loads that they bear and the ever more common speed bumps up and down the country.  Other parts of the suspension system (joints, shock absorbers and wishbones) also take the strain and can fail

Coil SpringCommon Failures of a Coil Spring

Coil spring failure is mainly caused by corrosion. If the epoxy power coating on the spring is damaged during installation, by stone chipping or friction caused by metal to metal contact with spring seats, exposed metal will start to rust (this can be very rapid in cold / wet climates).

Because of the high stress levels involved during compression and recoil, any rust will be a weak point that will cause the spring to break. The break often occurs at the top or bottom of the spring because of the higher levels of stress.

How do I know if shock absorbers need replacing?

There are 2 ways you can find out if a replacement is required and hasn't yet been recommended by a mechanic.

The first is a physical inspection, carefully with the car jacked up feel for broken a broken coil or if possible have a good look at each spring seat for signs of missing coil.

The other obvious sign of a broken coil spring is a "twanging" noise or continual noise when driving if the spring is not seated properly. Also a car not sat level is a good indication of a broken coil spring.

Why fit a pair of coil springs and not just one?KYB Coil Springs

It is generally good practice to change both sides when a coil spring  has failed as this will keep all suspension in balance, also if one coil spring has gone over time then the other side is probably on its way also. If you have the time and a little bit more money it is well worth swapping both sides as it will probably save you a trip to the garage in the long run.

Need a coil spring to go with your shock absorber or vice versa, maybe a topmount?
