Shock Absorbers
What is a shock absorber?
A shock absorbers main purpose is to keep a vehicle's wheels on the ground so that it can transmit braking forces to the road whilst driving. Without this contact with the road, there is a real danger that you will lose control of your vehicle. Shock absorbers are therefore one of the most important parts of the vehicle when it comes
Common Failures of a Shock Absorber
Shock absorber failures can generally be split into 2 different areas;
-
Oil Leakage
Shock absorber oil leakage normally occurs as a result of a damaged oil seal or bushing.
-
Physical Defect
A physical defect can be a bent or broken shock absorber.
Shock Absorbers Replacement Check List
Not sure if your shock absorber has gone, just use the check list below and if you answer yes to more than one it will be worth having your shock absorbers checked by a mechanic.
- Has your car already done more than 50,000 miles?
- Does your car dip at the front in tight corners?
- Are there worn sections in the profile of the tyres and do your tyres wear quickly?
- Does the car feel jumpy when you are driving?
- Does the car react strongly to undulations in the road, drain covers and pot holes?
- Is the piston rod and the shock absorber covered in oil?
- Does the piston rod show signs of grooves?
- Does the car feel unstable in all driving conditions?
Why fit a pair of shock absorbers and not just one?
It is generally good practice to change both sides when a shock absorber has failed as this will keep all suspension in balance, also if one shock absorber has gone over time then the other side is probably on its way also. If you have the time and a little bit more money it is well worth swapping both sides as it will probably save you a trip to the garage in the long run.
